Definition
Slip ring transmitters are electromechanical components that are employed to transmit electric power of any kind from a stationary to a rotating part. In short, a slip ring or slip ring transmitter is used wherever a rotary movement of more than 360° takes place and current is required by a consumer.
Power transmission
The transmission principle is based on mechanical contact. The conducting link between stator and rotor is created by a sliding contact or brushes. This system is ideally suited for the transmission of power and signals. The actual current is defined by voltage and load (i.e. volt and ampere) and is sub-divided into various groups, depending on the application, each of which is distributed by rotation:
- Main currents
- Control currents
- Measuring currents
- Data
- Video signals
Furthermore, optical signals and inductive currents can be transmitted contact-free and without interference.
Forms
Slip ring transmitters are selected according to the technical specifications of the application or are designed to suit, if the specifications are not available. The input for the selection or design is the rotational speed that defines the system to be employed. The dimensions of the transmitter can then be determined from the number of contact decks and their currents. The distance between the individual contact decks depends on the creepage distances and clearances demanded in the respective codes and directives (VDE, EMC, UL/CSA, etc.).
Combination with media distributors
Since what is needed is generally not only the transmission of electric current and signals, complex solutions are often called for. If necessary, the slip ring unit can be combined with liquid and gaseous media. With these combinations, maximum reliability and a long service life are guaranteed.
